Our Company

Washington County Emergency Medical Services Authority (WCEMSA) was created on January 25, 2001 by the 110th Maine State Legislature.

WCEMSA was formed to provide emergency medical services for the Washington County area and surrounding counties after the region’s private company ceased operations in December 2000. WCEMSA is a Quasi Municipal agency non-profit 501(c)(3) and the governing body of Downeast EMS. WCEMSA Board of Directors is comprised of a representative from each town that is in the Downeast EMS coverage area.

Downeast EMS is a professional emergency services company with three base locations across Washington County, Maine. From our bases in Baileyville, Eastport, and Lubec, we cover a large area of Washington county. In addition to emergency response, we provide interfacility transfers from Calais Regional Hospital and Downeast Community Hospital. Downeast EMS also provides paramedic intercepts to area ambulance services. We are also available to attend community events in our numerous member towns where we can provide ambulance tours, as well as blood pressure clinics.

We provide care at the EMT-Basic, Advanced EMT and Paramedic levels. We are dedicated to patient care and are strong advocates for our patients.

Currently, these are the towns covered by Downeast EMS:

Alexander, Baileyville, Berry Township, Big Lake Township, Cathance Township, Charlotte, Codyville, Cooper, Crawford, Cutler (191 portion), Day Block Township, Eastport, Greenlaw Chopping Township, Lambert Lake, Lubec, Meddybemps, Perry, Princeton, Trescott, Township 26, Township 30, Wesley, and North Whiting.
